Benjamin Gras represents the sixth-generation of winemakers at Domaine Santa Duc in Gigondas. In this short interview, Benjamin shares his perspective on farming–namely the implementation of biodynamic agriculture in his family’s vineyards, which have been farmed organically by his father, Yves, for over 30 years.  How long have you been interested in biodynamics? For many years. I have read a lot about biodynamic agriculture, scientific and philosophical books as well as articles. Since I am rather Cartesian, some scientific articles comparing biological and biodynamic agriculture have helped me greatly in my decision. Biodynamics is still struggling against a rather esoteric…

Wink Lorch is not one to skip her homework in favor of fanciful tales. It is this dedication to truth and discovery that made her first book, Jura Wine, so compelling and a necessity for anyone interested in the wines of that region. It is with this same conviction and desire for fact over fantasy that she now turns her attention to neighboring areas in her upcoming second book, Wines of the French Alps: Savoie, Bugey and beyond. “So, now while writing Wines of the French Alps I’m digging deep into Savoie lore, law and labels… And the story of the history…

A few weeks ago, we had the good fortune of spending the day in Bandol with Robert De Salvo (owner) and Romain Bournaud (winemaker) of Bastide de la Ciselette. It was hard to imagine there ever being a bad day to be in Bandol, with gorgeous hillsides of vines spilling out under a spotless sky that converges in the distance with the welcoming hush of the Mediterranean Sea. Catch a glimpse of the glory of Bastide de la Ciselette’s estate vineyard, Brulat du Castellet, in our latest drone vineyard tour.

We came upon a bucolic scene in January when we wound our way up from Nuits-Saint-Georges to the tiny village of Chaux to visit with Julien Cruchandeau. A former DJ turned vigneron, Julien has created quite a stir with the wines he creates in the cellar just below his family home. We joined Julien and his two young children for an afternoon in his Les Cabottes vineyard in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. And while the kids scrambled onto the old stone hut that holds watch over the vines, we explored this stunning site with Julien telling us its story along the…

In January of this year, Martine’s Wines Vice President Kate Laughlin traveled to Burgundy to meet with some of our producers, including our newest addition to the portfolio–Domaine Gouffier. Here, Kate shares “sur le zinc” her account of the team’s visit with Frédéric Gueugneau and Benoît Pagot at the domaine in Fontaines. We arrived to Domaine Gouffier on a misty-cold morning and after a few wrong turns around the commune of Fontaines. For once, I hadn’t done my homework–any homework–and had no idea what I was walking into. I hadn’t googled the domaine, hadn’t asked Greg to give me an overview of…

It was a chilly January afternoon in Fleurie when we visited with the always entertaining vigneron Marc Delienne. Marc’s story and that of his chateau is an intriguing one, and we invite you to tour the grounds of Domaine Marc Delienne from the air in “Beaujolais From Above.”

We are back in Burgundy again, which means MW One is taking to the skies and providing new perspectives of the vineyard holdings of our producers. Today, Thibault Morey of Domaine Morey-Coffinet was our guide in Chassagne-Montrachet, as we filmed his prized holdings in Dent de Chien (1er Cru), Blanchots Dessus (1er Cru), and Bâtard-Montrachet (Grand Cru). Later this afternoon, it was ex-fighter pilot turned vigneron Xavier Horiot of Domaine Launay-Horiot who supervised our flights over his Pommard sites: Perrieres Les Perrieres, Les Chaponnieres (1er Cru), and Les Rugiens Bas (1er Cru). In this video, we offer just a glimpse of some of…

In January of this year, we spent an afternoon with vigneron Bruno Clavelier, touring several vineyards to gain insight from the man himself about each location. We brought our company drone–MW One–along with us to provide a new perspective on these special plots of vines. Here, in our first installment of “Burgundy From Above,” we visit Bruno’s share of La Combe d’Orveaux in Chambolle-Musigny. You can view it below or subscribe and watch all our videos on our MW YouTube Channel.

The streets of downtown Chicago served as a beautiful backdrop as we sat down with representatives of 15 of our producers from France at our Grand Tasting 2017 event yesterday. Sharing insights and stories (and even a song!), these incredible people conveyed both passion and purpose in their answers to compelling questions that provide a glimpse into the lives of those who produce these gorgeous wines. Over the coming months, we will be sharing segments from these interviews in a special series in which we pull back the curtain and give our producers a chance to tell their tales in their own…

Xavier Horiot is a soft-spoken and unassuming man, but he is far from sheepish. A former fighter pilot in the French army, Xavier inherited (along with his aunt) his late-grandfather’s domaine in 2000. However, there was turmoil within the family over what to do with the estate–to sell or not to sell. Xavier will be stateside next week for our Grand Tasting 2017 events in both Chicago and New York on March 27th & 28th. In this video, Xavier discusses the symbolic significance of his label and its deeper connection to the past and future of Domaine Launay-Horiot.
