Fine wine importer and wholesaler Martine’s Wines celebrated its five-year anniversary under owners Gregory Castells and Kate Laughlin by announcing the creation of a California sales team and several notable additions to its portfolio as the company approaches its 40th year of business. Martine’s Wines was started in 1979 by legendary tastemaker Martine Saunier, who hand-selected Castells and Laughlin to purchase the company in December 2012. “Five years ago, neither of us had worked in the import business,” said Gregory Castells, Co-Owner and President of Martine’s Wines. “We brought experiences from other sides of the industry and, in looking back,…

In early 2017, when Domaine Santa Duc joined the Martine’s Wines portfolio, our team knew we were adding both quality and depth to our well-established roster of stars from the Rhone Valley. The Gras family has been a fixture in Gigondas since the 19th century, and in recent years, under the guidance of Yves Gras, Domaine Santa Duc has gained notoriety for its ability to honor tradition while taking strides to innovate and evolve. The surest sign of this willingness to break new ground is the domaine’s new winemaking facility, which was under construction when we visited in April of last…

Benjamin Gras represents the sixth-generation of winemakers at Domaine Santa Duc in Gigondas. In this short interview, Benjamin shares his perspective on farming–namely the implementation of biodynamic agriculture in his family’s vineyards, which have been farmed organically by his father, Yves, for over 30 years.  How long have you been interested in biodynamics? For many years. I have read a lot about biodynamic agriculture, scientific and philosophical books as well as articles. Since I am rather Cartesian, some scientific articles comparing biological and biodynamic agriculture have helped me greatly in my decision. Biodynamics is still struggling against a rather esoteric…

Martine’s Wines is proud to announce the addition of the historic estate, Domaine Santa Duc of Gigondas, to the company’s portfolio. “We have found success recently introducing exciting yet unknown wines to the US market, but to have a domaine of the esteem of Santa Duc join us after having been a leader in the Southern Rhone for over 30 years is thrilling,” said Gregory Castells, President of Martine’s Wines. Domaine Santa Duc, established in 1874, found widespread acclaim in the United States after a longtime partnership with Robert Kacher Selections. “It is thanks to Bobby that people in this…

The streets of downtown Chicago served as a beautiful backdrop as we sat down with representatives of 15 of our producers from France at our Grand Tasting 2017 event yesterday. Over the coming months, we will be sharing segments from these interviews in a special series in which we pull back the curtain and give our producers a chance to tell their tales in their own…

Every one talks about the year of the 13 moons greatly affecting the climate: too hot, too wet, too stormy, too cold. In fact, this is a year of uncontrollable weather affecting every region of France. I arrived in Burgundy on September 1st, having calculated the dates of my trip according to the date of blooming season. If you add 90 days, you get almost the correct date of harvest. Mildew affected vineyard in Vosne-Romanée Well, it was all wrong. The summer was wet and cold until September 8th. Every one was depressed. Some even had hale…
