Limited Release
Situated just across the Loire River from Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé has greatly benefited from its neighbor’s meteoric rise. While Sancerre became a global shorthand for Loire Sauvignon Blanc, many producers in Pouilly-Fumé found there was little need to push boundaries. The result is an appellation whose reputation doesn’t always reflect the quality of its terroir. This is the inspiration behind Jean-Philippe Agisson’s Pouilly-Fumé La Belle Endormie, whose label shows Sleeping Beauty gazing across the river toward Sancerre. It’s a wink, a knowing jab at an appellation that’s been sleeping on its own potential.
He would know. For a decade, Jean-Philippe made wine at the legendary Alphonse Mellot in Sancerre before becoming cellar master at Dagueneau, arguably the most iconic address in the Loire. He launched his own label in 2017, which remains a side project in name only.
We visited Jean-Philippe in late 2024 while these wines were still in barrel. What struck us most was the balance between precision and complexity. Layer after layer of citrus peel, crushed stone, subtle smoke, and saline minerality unfold with remarkable clarity and savory depth. This is the kind of bottle you’ll find on the lists at iconic restaurants like Quince in San Francisco, Obélix in Chicago, or Raoul’s in New York.
Much of that character comes from the famed Kimmeridgian chalk soils beneath the vines, the same ancient seabed found throughout Chablis, Champagne & Sancerre. Jean-Philippe farms organically with biodynamic principles, harvests entirely by hand, ferments in large wood, and bottles after roughly eighteen months of élevage, an unusually long time for the Loire. He calls this extended time in the cellar “a gift to wine,” and tasting these, it’s hard to disagree.

Pouilly-Fumé La Belle Endormie 2023
These grapes are from a 0.5-hectare plot of organically cultivated vines. The vineyard is in Tracy-sur-Loire; the `Les Champs Billards` parcel, planted in 1987, has a terroir of large pebbles over limestone bedrock. Harvest by hand, direct press, and aging on lees for 18 months in older barrels. The wines are bottled unfiltered and unfined.
Sancerre Blanc Cuvée l’Eclat 2023
In the village of Saint-Satur, not far from Rochoy. South-facing, across from Sancerre on Silex. Called l’Eclat because of the luminosity in the vineyard. Aged in demi-muids. No malolactic fermentation.
