Burgundy’s Hidden Corners

Today, we’re highlighting some exceptional terroirs that fall outside of the lines of what Burgundy lovers may consider to be the classic appellations. This is far from a new trend, but it’s hitting critical mass and it’s long overdue to highlight some of our most exciting finds. If you’ve ever had a bottle from Maconnais Madman Jean-Marie Guffens, Saint-Aubin’s Hubert Lamy or the micro selections coming out of Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, you get where we’re going with this. The following set of wines highlights three distinct terroirs that are a cut above the rest and are just hiding in plain sight.

And as a firm that’s been importing both the established and future stars of Burgundy since Martine brought her first cases of Jayer into the US in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s, we love seeing this continued evolution of a region we hold so nearly and dearly. This isn’t one of those wine offerings with the promise of a new discovery that is more intellectual in nature than actually delicious (I hate falling for those by the way). This is a zoom-in on three different terroirs from three excellent winemakers who know how to seek out the best of what’s in their backyard.

Domaine du Chancelier Saint-Romain Les Bancs 2022

Perched high in the hills west of Meursault, Saint-Romain is a windswept pocket framed by dramatic limestone cliffs. Elsa and Cédric Ehrhart, among the most meticulous and hardworking winemakers we know, approach every detail with precision—from hand-harvesting into small boxes to their minimal-intervention work in the cellar. Their Les Bancs bottling captures the essence of this high-altitude site: bright, finely etched, and full of energy, a wine that reflects both its cool slopes and the thoughtful hands behind it.

Set just beyond Dijon, Marsannay marks the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits. Les Longeroies is widely considered one of the prime candidates for the village’s first Premier Cru designation, and few understand its potential better than Cyril Audoin, whose family has championed Marsannay for generations. His 2022 Les Longeroies shows exactly why the site deserves that promotion: vivid red fruit, rose petal, and spice carried on a silken frame, all marked by the lift and precision that define Audoin’s style.
Domaine Michel Bouzereau et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Les Vignes Franches 2023

The Bouzereau family, best known for their benchmark Meursault whites, brings the same precision and polish to their Beaune reds. Premier Cru Les Vignes Franches, located south of Beaune nearing the Pommard border, produces a wine that marries Beaune’s finesse with Pommard’s firmer backbone. Bouzereau’s 2023 shows juicy red fruit, gentle spice, and fine, persistent tannins—an expressive, beautifully balanced Pinot Noir that will reward a few years in the cellar.
