Bruno Clavelier’s Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d’Orveau is one of the best-kept secrets in the Martine’s portfolio.
La Combe d’Orveau sits directly above Musigny and parts of this vineyard have been elevated to Musigny Grand Cru status over time. Bruno Clavelier holds the majority of the 1er Cru section and firmly believes his parcel deserves the same classification—it shares identical geology with Les Petits Musigny just across the wall, which is also the source for Vogüe’s Musigny. His grandfather simply never pursued the reclassification to avoid higher vineyard taxes.
When I tasted this with Bruno, my notes (remember I’m an avid surfer) read: “Perfect glide, seamless and effortless. Like catching a glassy wave and riding it all the way as if walking across water.” It delivers all the finesse of Musigny with Clavelier’s signature elegance—high-toned red fruits, mouthwatering freshness, and polished tannins in complete harmony.
When you consider the rarity and price of a bottle of Musigny, even top Chambolle 1er Crus for that matter, this is beyond compelling for my palate.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d’Orveau 2022
What makes La Combe d’Orveau so compelling begins underground. To know Bruno Clavelier is to care deeply about geology. The vineyard sits in a narrow, windswept pocket of land that fits like a puzzle piece between Échezeaux and Musigny Grand Cru, fusing the refinement of Chambolle with the depth and structure of Vosne-Romanée. The soils here are ancient oolitic limestone mixed with quartzite and veins of calcite, which reflect sunlight toward the vines, giving the wine its clarity, lift, and precision. The stones pictured alongside the bottle come directly from the vineyard.
The vines themselves are just as rare. All old vine Pinot Fin planted as early as 1928, with any newer plantings propagated from massale selection clippings. This is as rare and as pure a vine material that can be found in Burgundy today, lending the wine a natural finesse and aromatic purity.
