Decanted
Domaine Bernard Burgaud’s philosophy is disarmingly simple: one estate, one wine, one grape. Resisting the trend towards bottling individual plots, they source from several lieux-dits to craft a single wine from 100% Syrah. The Burgaud family has long believed that drawing from all their terroirs to create a single cuvée results in the most complete and balanced expression of the appellation. Their wine shows a self-possessed elegance, eschewing showiness for a harmonious and sincere reflection of Côte-Rôtie. This is a hidden gem of a winery, run with a steady hand, producing just 1,000 cases per year and representing the soul of the region.
Within this simplicity lies a beautiful paradox. The estate makes just one wine, yet it is built from a mosaic of nine hectares of vineyards across Côte-Rôtie: Champin, Leyat, Côte Blonde, Les Moutonnes, Fongeant, and others. The Côte Brune parcels provide depth and muscularity, while those from Côte Blonde brings perfume and finesse. It is simultaneously singular and multiple—one wine shaped by many places. Chave’s legendary Hermitage is always a blend across parcels following the belief that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts (or parcels in this case.) And traditional icon Bartolo Mascarello famously stayed true to the art of blending while his neighbors followed the trend of single vineyard expression.
Bernard Burgaud has been producing this singular wine since 1982 from a steep hillside above Ampuis. His son Pierre took over winemaking duties in 2019 and has brought a fresh perspective while maintaining the traditional methods that have defined the domaine from the beginning: hand-harvesting, whole clusters, native yeasts, and élevage in seasoned barrels. The resulting wine reveals dark berries, violets, the region’s classic black olive profile, and a subtle smoked spice. The palate is composed and finely structured—nothing flashy, nothing forced. Already expressive yet firmly built for aging, it is a wine with a decade or more ahead of it.
