Lobster Rolls & Meursault

Summer in New England is an amazing time and place. And in the depths of winter, there’s no better memory for me to cling to than sitting harbor-side at my favorite lobster pound Down East, on the quiet side of Mount Desert, Maine. Bonus points if you know exactly where I’m talking about based on those hints, but it’s my secret for now…

And while I may always be “from away,” I’ve made lobster rolls and Meursault a summertime tradition. Michel Bouzereau’s Meursault Les Grands Charrons has been one of my go-to bottles for the past few summers, and I drank the newly arrived 2024 there just last week.

There’s a reason I keep coming back to this particular bottle. The vineyard sits just below Le Tessons, one of Meursault’s most highly regarded lieux-dits, with vines dating back to 1947. It’s technically village Meursault, but consistently punches above its classification. The 2024 has everything we love about the domaine: freshness and energy, with enough texture and depth to make it unmistakably Meursault.

Throughout Burgundy and Paris, you’ll find Domaine Michel Bouzereau on nearly every serious restaurant wine list. The family has been making wine in Meursault for seven generations, building an enviable collection of vineyards across some of the appellation’s best terroirs. The wines are clean, bright and energetic, with just the right amount of texture and flesh to make you crave the second sip, or glass…

For us, Les Grands Charrons offers one of the best combinations of pedigree and accessibility in the lineup. It may not carry a premier cru designation, but that’s part of the appeal. This is one of those insiders’ Meursaults that reminds us why the name on the bottle and the vineyard itself can matter more than the classification.
