  • Drs. Leighton consulted for prestigious Burgundy and Bordeaux estates, enriching their own winemaking approach.
  • Kalin Cellars remains celebrated for complex, long-lived wines that resist market trends in favor of timeless quality.

Kalin Cellars stands as a unique presence in the world of California wines and as a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders, the late Drs. Terry and Frances Leighton. Established in 1977 and operating with minimal intervention, Kalin Cellars produced approximately 7,000 cases annually, focusing on single-vintage, single-vineyard wines. The Leightons were pioneers in the development of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from cool-climate sites in California.

The Leightons, both microbiologists by training, brought a scientific rigor to their craft, emphasizing the importance of patience and precision. Their approach involved the use of slow-fermenting yeasts, sur lie maturation, and extended barrel aging, all with the aim of developing a sense of umami in their wines. This commitment to depth and complexity means that Kalin bottlings were only released when the Leightons decided that the wine was ready, generally a decade or more after the vintage, ensuring they reached the consumer only at the beginning of their ideal drinking window.

The Leightons' influence extended beyond their own label, as their expertise in microbiology and fermentation meant that they were in demand as consultants for renowned estates in Burgundy and Bordeaux. While working with these properties, Terry and Frances were also able to enrich their own knowledge, further cementing their unique marriage of Old World traditions with New World terroir.

Kalin's dedication to excellence garnered acclaim from critics and connoisseurs alike. Robert Parker once described Terry Leighton as "one of California’s two most talented winemakers," lauding the wines as "the wines of a genius." Despite their limited production and niche appeal, Kalin wines have found their way into esteemed restaurants and the cellars of discerning collectors, appreciated for their complexity and longevity.

In an era where immediacy often outweighs patience, Kalin Cellars remains a beacon for those who value the artistry of time-honored winemaking. Their wines, much like the Leightons themselves, are characterized by depth, character, and a refusal to conform to fleeting trends. For enthusiasts willing to explore beyond the mainstream, Kalin offers a rewarding journey into the complexities of aged, artisanal wines.
