Last week, we had our New York City Summer Portfolio Tasting at a new venue on the edge of the Flower District called Wine Disciples. Martine’s Wines only has a couple annual tasting events for the New York and New Jersey trade, and this one was extra special — because it was my first! Tuesday morning I traveled by bicycle and a quick ferry ride over the East River into Manhattan to calm my nerves. Would anyone come on this first day of September? Would I be able to answer questions and speak knowledgeably about our wines?  It’s akin to opening night…

Martine’s Wines was proud to feature the wonderful Meursaults of Domaine Bernard-Bonin for the first event at Manhattan Wine Company’s brand-new storefront in West Chelsea. This is arguably the most aesthetically pleasing and fully-functioning new wine store in Manhattan.   President, Gregory Castells and Director of Sales, Kevin Foran were on hand to present the wines to a large group of consumers and collectors who happily tasted through a stellar line up and soaked up knowledge and information on this under-the-radar producer. Fun was had by all and they even bought some wine!

I arrived in Santa Fe on Tuesday afternoon, grabbed my rental car and drove out to Taos via the Rio Grande Gorge.  It must have been 60 degrees, completely sunny.  I got settled in my room at the Taos Inn, where the restaurant Doc Martin’s is located, right in the center of town (population 5,000).  Then headed to The Love Apple for dinner where I ran into two bottlings of Dominique Cornin: Macon-Chaintre 2013 and Pouilly Fuisse 2012.  The food was fabulous, and inspired me to return two nights later, by invitation from the staff as well as Charles from…

It was a pleasure to return this summer to IPNC. At the Grand Dinner on Friday, I got right to work rounding up all those interested in tasting some top quality wines with me. Together we enjoyed a superb line up from Martine’s Wines, including cuvées from one of the newest producers, Domaine des Ardoisières, from the steep and rocky slopes of Savoie. We couldn’t have chosen a better venue for our first Napa Valley area tasting than TORC on Main Street in the town of Napa in late June. The high ceilings and airy space helped to accommodate a sizable crowd of sommeliers, retailers and winemakers. Napa may be synonymous with American wine production but there are plenty of people who still love their French wines. While at first we endeavored to showcase all the new producers we have recently added to the portfolio, we soon found ourselves including all the new release Burgundies, Champagnes and core items in the line up….

Our first seminar in the upstairs private dining room at Verbena was a cozy squeeze; we didn’t want to turn away any who came out to taste and discuss a collection of Douro wines with Dirk Niepoort. This was his first visit to the US in a while, and sadly a short one, so we wanted to make the most of Dirk’s time.  The venue was ideal (save for our overbooking!) – lovely staff, a bright and intimate room with a view of the large, open dining area, and a communal feel at the mammoth dining table. And what a…
