An article from Wine Spectator published November 15, 2016 Lalou Bize-Leroy is recognized as one of Wine Spectator’s “luminaries who made a difference” in the magazine’s 40th Anniversary issue. In 1955, Henri Leroy installed his 23-year-old daughter Marcelle, known as Lalou, at the head of the family’s Burgundy négociant, Maison Leroy. The move allowed him to focus on other, more lucrative parts of the family business, mainly a brandy distillery. Not surprisingly, men in 1950s Burgundy were not keen on taking orders from a young woman. Bize-Leroy was unfazed. Throughout her career, this intelligent woman has been successful by developing strong principles and sticking to…

August 11, 2016 Martine's Wines

An article by James Molesworth for Wine Spectator published on August 11, 2016.  The latest installment in the documentary-styled wine movie series is worth a viewing; official trailer debuts here When it comes to portraying wine on film (or TV), success has proven harder to come by than a good botrytized red wine. There’s the bad, like Somm and Mondovino, as well as the boring, such as Uncorked (the Somm-based tv show), along with a host of other “meh” wine-themed flicks and TV flops. But the real successes are few and far between, and often rather small in scale. I was a fan of A Year…

July 13, 2016 Martine's Wines

An article by William Kelley in the July issue of Robb Report. Red or white, rosé or sparkling, these wines bring out the best in the season’s memorable moments. Summer is a time for exploration and adventure, and the experiences will be all the sweeter with the perfect wine on hand to suit the moment. The best summer wines enhance the season’s ambience, perfecting a romantic evening, adding an effervescent note to a celebration, or simply synergizing with seasonal flavors. The wines must be vibrant and refreshing, playful or even frivolous—meant for carefree sipping as much as earnest contemplation. But above all, summer wines must…

Last week, we had our New York City Summer Portfolio Tasting at a new venue on the edge of the Flower District called Wine Disciples. Martine’s Wines only has a couple annual tasting events for the New York and New Jersey trade, and this one was extra special — because it was my first! Tuesday morning I traveled by bicycle and a quick ferry ride over the East River into Manhattan to calm my nerves. Would anyone come on this first day of September? Would I be able to answer questions and speak knowledgeably about our wines?  It’s akin to opening night…

Martine’s Wines was proud to feature the wonderful Meursaults of Domaine Bernard-Bonin for the first event at Manhattan Wine Company’s brand-new storefront in West Chelsea. This is arguably the most aesthetically pleasing and fully-functioning new wine store in Manhattan.   President, Gregory Castells and Director of Sales, Kevin Foran were on hand to present the wines to a large group of consumers and collectors who happily tasted through a stellar line up and soaked up knowledge and information on this under-the-radar producer. Fun was had by all and they even bought some wine!

June 30, 2015 Martine's Wines

An article by Bruce Sanderson from the June 30, 2015 issue of Wine Spectator. Isolated but undaunted, Lalou Bize-Leroy makes some of Burgundy’s finest wines Disaster loomed in Burgundy’s 1993 vintage. A wet spring led to severe attacks of mildew. To save their grape crops, growers had to spray twice as much fungicide as in a normal year. Marcelle (“Lalou”) Bize-Leroy would have none of that. The owner of Domaine Leroy, with holdings in many of Burgundy’s finest vineyards, she had been committed to biodynamic principles since founding the estate in 1988. She adamantly refused the use of chemicals, even…
